If the interior of the roof is unlined, make sure you look for cracks which will be showing the light of day as this will point towards areas needing closer examination. Point a torch on the timbers to check for water discoloration. If stains are beginning to show on the timber, try to outline the foundation of the discolored area.

It is helpful to examine the internal roof space following a long period of rain, as the foundation of a leak is easier to mark out. Slate does worsen with age so make sure you check for hairline cracks by looking for discoloration on the tiles.

Outside, make sure you check the whole roof by examining at ground point. It is simple to spot a disorderly or slipped slate next to the standard lines of slates. If at hand there’s a change to the color of a segment, it might have been recently exposed and consequently un-weathered.

Look for a chalky or a crumbling surface, recognized as delimitation, which shows weakening slate, which is no longer doing its trade efficiently. Look at the edge on the skyline and make sure you check for gaps in the mortar joints. Ensure you check for the condition of the flashings at abutments and roughly around chimney stacks. Take away the slates from the area needing substitution. Lift the slates in the row straight away above the uppermost ones need replacement. Support them up with wooden wedges and raise them two at a time. Work on removing the top path of tiles and labor down to the course underneath and carry on down the roof line as far as needed.

Substitute the slates by starting on the lowest path and hooking each slate over the panel by its nib. Ensure that you have lined the tile up properly and it is centered frankly between the two tiles directly underneath it.

Complete each course by nailing the ends of the slates to the battens with galvanized or aluminum alloy nails. When you reach your destination at the top course of slates to be built-in, use the wooden wedges to raise the slates in the course exceeding. Slide the new slates into place. Shift one of the wedges along and replicate the procedure along the top course.
